"I know where you were last night, Sheridan."

Walking behind her mother in the hallway of her parent’s home, Sheri cringed. The armload of gifts she was carrying teetered a bit as she tried to brace herself for the oncoming lecture. "I guess you talked to Paulina."

"Well, what do you expect? You didn't answer your phone yesterday, for me or your father. I knew if anybody in town would know where you were, it was her."

She rolled her eyes. "I'm sorry I missed your call, Mama."

Clara shrugged. "You're grown. You can do what you want, and you don't have to explain it to me. I just wanted to make sure you got here safe. It was such a long drive to take by yourself."

She stopped in her tracks as they entered the living room. "So, you're not going to lecture me?"

Clara turned her way. "No, I'm not. You're an adult, Sheridan. You're perfectly capable of handling yourself."

Releasing her held breath, she deposited the gifts beneath the tree, and plopped down on the soft carpet.

Her mother bent to adjust the tree skirt, then stood. "Besides, it was only a matter of time before you and Nick got together."

Her head snapped up. "Were not together." From where she was seated on the floor, her mother towered over her, a knowing, Cheshire cat-like smile on her face. "Really, Mom? What about the so-called feud between us and the Dunns?"

Clara shrugged her shoulders. "Child, I don't have any problem with those people. It's Doreen that insists on keeping some mess stirred up."

She blinked twice, confused. "What is the feud about?'

Clara closed her eyes, and let a sigh escape. "Come sit on the sofa with me and I'll tell you about it." She moved to the cream colored leather sectional, and gestured for her to join her.

As Sheri sank into the buttery soft cushion, Clara began the story.

"This was about, oh, thirty years ago, right after me and your daddy got married. I was working in the store in the office. Now, old George Dunn, Sr, that was Nick's grandaddy, used to love to come in the store."

That didn't make much sense to her, so she voiced her confusion. "Why? The Dunns have their own store."

Clara rolled her eyes, her lips pursing into a frown. "George Sr. was a fresh old man, and he just took a shine to me, even though I was married and about 50 years too young for him. He was always flirting with me."

She nodded, and felt a bit disgusted. George Sr. had died when she was very young, so she hadn’t had much interaction with him. It still grossed her out to know he'd been a pervert.

Clara continued the story. "Anyhow, that day, I was working on payroll, and I just didn't have time for his foolishness. So when he came by the office with that potty mouth of his, I told him to get lost."

"And that's why the families have been fighting all these years? Because you put him out of the store?"

"No.
